A customer reported an issue launching the latest ControlUp software ver. 8.7, with Symantec antivirus deleting the .exe file. It may be down to ControlUp’s update of their 3rd party tool for obfuscation. It was suggested that the .exe file be uploaded to VirusTotal, to increase the number of customers who have seen it.

Have you guys packaged 8.7 in a different way? On one customer AV prevent 8.7 from launching. Doing another upgrade now and AV is deleting the .exe file when I try to launch it
never seen this happen with any version before
i’ll get it white listed but unusual
What AV is that? Trend Deep Security did not have any issues with it.
thats symatec
both issues were symatec
As far as I’m aware, we did update the 3rd party tool we use for obfuscation. As in, updated the version of the same product. Perhaps that is what triggered it.
Symantec will do that for files not seen by many customers. It’s part of the shared insight network. You can see in your screenshot that only 5 customers had seen the file. That the penalty for being an early adopter! You can always upload the .EXE to VirusTotal so that it will analyze the file and share stats with others, as well as Symantec.
thanks 🙂
