Dell serviceshell.exe Consumes Large Amounts of RAM on Devices Running Dell SupportAssist
Status: Fix Released • Monitoring Resolution
ControlUp has identified high memory consumption by serviceshell.exe across multiple customer environments. In some cases, the process consumes several GB of RAM, representing a significant share of available system memory on affected devices.
This behavior was observed in serviceshell.exe instances with a process/file version of 5.7, which is associated with Dell Client Management Service and Dell Command | Update / Dell Update v5.7. The executable appears to be a non-essential telemetry-related component associated with Dell SupportAssist and other Dell utilities. Affected Dell SupportAssist versions may differ and may include v5.5 and other versions.
This behavior has been observed across more than 280 organizations and is classified as medium severity.
High RAM usage by serviceshell.exe may increase memory pressure on affected endpoints, potentially slowing down other applications, reducing system responsiveness, and contributing to paging or degraded user experience, especially on devices with limited available memory.
Dell has released Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin version 5.5.16.2, A00, which is the version previously identified by Dell as the planned fix for the excessive serviceshell.exe memory-consumption issue.
Organizations experiencing this behavior should test and deploy Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin version 5.5.16.2 on affected endpoints, then monitor serviceshell.exe memory usage to confirm that consumption returns to an acceptable baseline.
Dell’s release notes list this update as improving system stability. Dell also recommends restarting the system after the update is installed.
Until the update is fully deployed, organizations should continue monitoring affected devices for elevated memory usage, paging, and performance degradation related to serviceshell.exe.
Dell has now published the updated Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin version 5.5.16.2, A00. This follows Dell’s earlier acknowledgement of the excessive serviceshell.exe memory-consumption issue and provides a clear remediation path for affected environments.

ControlUp will continue monitoring this pattern to confirm whether deployment of version 5.5.16.2 resolves the excessive memory-consumption behavior at scale.
