Widespread Zoom.exe + AMD Radeon Driver Crash Resolved by Upgrading to Zoom 6.5+

August 14, 2025 • ID: CUA-2025-002
Severity: Medium  •  Impacted Organizations: 100+ •  Vendor: Zoom  •  App: Zoom.exe
Description:

ControlUp’s Innovation Guild identified a recurring crash pattern affecting Zoom.exe on endpoints running AMD Radeon graphics drivers. The crash signature consistently pointed to atidxx64.dll, indicating a driver-level failure triggered when specific Zoom versions interact with AMD graphics components.

This issue was surfaced through ControlUp’s global crash analytics, leveraging anonymized metadata across customer environments to detect application stability trends at scale.

What is the Impact:

This crash pattern has been observed across 100+ organizations and is classified as medium severity.

Impacted environments experienced:

  • Repeated Zoom.exe crashes during or shortly after launch
  • Disrupted meetings and reduced conferencing reliability
  • Degraded end-user experience on affected endpoints
  • Increased support tickets related to Zoom stability

The consistency of the crash signature across environments indicated a widespread compatibility issue rather than isolated endpoint misconfigurations.

Advised Resolution:

Organizations experiencing this issue should:

  • Upgrade Zoom from version 6.4.x to 6.5 or higher
  • Validate that the updated Zoom version is fully deployed across affected endpoints
  • Monitor crash trends post-upgrade to confirm stability improvements

ControlUp’s aggregated telemetry shows that upgrading to Zoom 6.5+ eliminates the crashing behavior entirely. At the time this pattern was identified, the resolution was not widely documented in Zoom release notes or broader IT community discussions.

Additional info:

This finding represents a high-confidence example of how targeted application updates can resolve widespread stability issues—even when vendor documentation is limited or delayed. ControlUp will continue monitoring this crash signature globally. If you’ve observed similar Zoom and AMD Radeon interactions or can confirm improvements after upgrading, sharing that feedback helps accelerate validation for the wider community.
