Microsoft Edge Update Utility (microsoftedgeupdate.exe) v1.3 Crashes at an Increasing Rate

ControlUp has identified a sudden and significant crash trend affecting microsoftedgeupdate.exe, the background update maintenance process used by the Microsoft Edge web browser.

Starting on August 21, 2026, the executable began showing a sharp increase in both daily crash volume and the number of affected devices. Prior to that date, crashes of microsoftedgeupdate.exe were rarely observed across the dataset.

In the first two days after the crash pattern began, the issue affected close to 1 million devices per day. As of August 24, the total number of affected devices had decreased significantly, but more than 100,000 devices were still affected daily.

This behavior has been observed across more than 790 organizations and is classified as medium severity.

Crashes of microsoftedgeupdate.exe may disrupt the automatic deployment of Microsoft Edge browser updates. In affected environments, Edge may fail to apply pending updates automatically until a user or administrator manually triggers the update process.

Although the immediate likelihood of direct user workflow disruption is low, this finding is classified as medium severity due to the extremely broad distribution of the crash pattern and the potential impact on browser update reliability across large numbers of managed endpoints.

Microsoft has not published a specific advisory for this issue at this time.
