When a remote assistance session is initiated using controlupconsole.exe, it is established using MSFT remote assistance. Later versions of ControlUp (9.0 upwards) use their own remote control mechanism, making it more independent from MSFT. A password is generated by the console, which it then uses to connect to the endpoint. The command executed is msra -openfile, with the file stored in the temp directory.

When you use controlupconsole.exe to initiate a remote assistance session, can someone outline what it’s doing in the background? how is it connecting to the session? msra.exe /somethingfancy? 🙂
Its just using MSFT remote assistance. That said it is HIGHLY dependent on what may be set in GPO. 9.0 will enhance this by using its own remote control mechanism so it won’t be dependent on MSFT.
I know it’s using MSRA, just didn’t know what’s being appended to the cmd to get it to connect to the session.
Gotcha. So my understanding is the agent configures the endpoint with a password (set by the console) and then makes the connection to the endpoint using the same password. As for the command, I’m not sure. Would have to verify in process explorer or something.
Just checked. The console is creating a file in temp and then using msra -openfile whatever.
Thanks Landon!
