Upgrading an Alternate COP Server with ControlUp

Posted on December 12, 2023

The user experienced issues when upgrading an alternate COP server following instructions from the ControlUp On-Premises Upgrade Guide (https://support.controlup.com/docs/on-premises-upgrade-guide). After making a snapshot and backup of the database, they managed to loopback the alternate COP server and successfully upgrade it. It was suggested that the documentation should be updated to facilitate the upgrade process with an alternate server.

Hello ControlUp Team 🙂

I’m writing because I have some questions/remarks about the upgrade documentation https://support.controlup.com/docs/on-premises-upgrade-guide

Maybe I’m wrong but I “don’t agree” with the process described about the COP server upgrade with an existing alternate COP server.

I followed the step as described in the link above, I was able to update my primary COP server successfully but unfortunately, it didn’t work for the alternate COP server..

The AD LDS configuration didn’t work because my primary COP server was already set with my alternate COP server and the link between them failed..

Regarding the primary COP server installation, I saw that the AD LDS configuration was not updated during the upgrade process (thing that is confirmed with the previous error message on my alternate COP server). So, I decided to loopback the alternate COP server to my previous (and precious 🙏) snapshot. I got back the AD LDS configuration for the alternate COP server, the 8.7 version of the ControlUp server and I just upgraded the alternate COP server as it’s done for the primary COP server. It worked perfectly… And really faster ! 🥳

Once again, “maybe I’m wrong” and I’ll be very grateful to know better about the process described in the online documentation.

But if I’m not wrong, maybe it would be fine to update it for an easier upgrade process.

Regards everyone 😉

Haven’t done an upgrade with an alternate server yep so can’t comment but I confirm that it’s a good idea to create a snapshot and a backup of the database before launchign the upgrade

It is 😉

That’s a best practise and this is something that is really adviced in the Upgrade guide 🙂
