It’s Widget Wednesday! This week… We are making dashboards interactive with variables and click-through insights! 🙂
This week’s Widget Wednesday focuses on a major usability upgrade to ControlUp Dashboards, enhanced variables, and interactivity that turn dashboards from static views into something you can actively explore.
The goal here is simple: make it easier to move through your data, apply filters instantly, and get to answers faster without rebuilding views or digging through layers of configuration.
What’s new in this episode:
Clickable navigation across the dashboard:
You can now click directly on device names and usernames within widgets and jump to their corresponding pages. This removes friction and makes it faster to move from a dashboard view into deeper investigation.
Expanded variable capabilities:
Variables have been extended from four to eight, giving you more flexibility to build complex, dynamic dashboards. Variables can now serve as both inputs and filters, allowing you to shape the dashboard experience to suit how you want to explore the data.
Improved search within variables:
Search functionality has been enhanced, making it easier to quickly find and select values (like specific cities) and use them as filters across multiple widgets.
Widgets as variables:
One of the most powerful additions is the ability to turn widgets themselves into interactive filters. By enabling “variable click”, elements like bars or donut segments become selectable inputs.
Click a bar → filter the dashboard.
Click a segment → refine the dataset.
This allows you to move from observation to action instantly.
Connected, real-time filtering:
Selections made in one Widget now dynamically update others. For example, clicking on an application in a chart can immediately filter related crash data or time series views, creating a more connected and responsive dashboard experience.
Works across multiple widget types:
These capabilities extend beyond bar charts to other visualizations like donuts, making the entire dashboard ecosystem more interactive and consistent.
Why it matters:
Dashboards shouldn’t just show data — they should help you explore it. These updates reduce friction, improve navigation, and make it easier to drill into what matters without leaving the dashboard context.
More interaction. Less guesswork. Faster insight.
