Widget Wednesday: Combining multiple metrics into a single dashboard view
This week’s Widget Wednesday focuses on working with multiple metrics inside ControlUp Dashboards, making it easier to build richer visualizations and compare related data within the same widget.
The video walks through how multiple metrics can be added, displayed, sorted, and visualized across different widget types, including support for VDI and DAS IQ data.
What’s new in this episode:
Multiple metrics in raw grid views:
@Chris Twiest begins with the raw grid view, where metrics are displayed as unaggregated records. Examples include fields such as:
- Device name
- CPU load
This provides a direct, detailed look at the underlying data without aggregation.
Combining metrics in aggregated tables:
Chris then moves into aggregated data, showing how multiple metrics can be displayed together within the same table while still supporting filters and group-by functionality.
Examples shown include:
- Device name
- Unique count
- Average CPU load
- Average free RAM
- Average Wi-Fi signal strength
This allows users to create more comprehensive operational views within a single widget.
Understanding sorting in top lists:
Chris explains how sorting works when using top lists. Devices are ranked by the selected sorting metric, such as average CPU load, while the remaining metrics for those same devices are displayed alongside them.
This makes it easier to compare related performance indicators in context.
Support across visualization types:
The same multi-metric configuration can also be displayed in:
- Bar charts
- Time series widgets
In time series views, legends help distinguish between the different metric aggregations being displayed.
Advanced renamed to JSON:
The previous “Advanced” label has now been renamed to JSON, reflecting the fact that the section exposes the raw JSON configuration view behind the widget setup.
VDI and DAS IQ support:
Chris also highlights that multi-metric support extends beyond desktop metrics and is available for:
- VDI data
- DAS IQ data
Examples include:
- Session logon duration
- CPU averages
- Machine names
- User account names
This broadens the ability to build more advanced dashboards across multiple data sources.
Why it matters:
Dashboards become much more valuable when related metrics can be viewed together. These enhancements make it easier to build richer visualizations, compare operational data side by side, and gain deeper insight without switching between widgets.
More metrics. More context. Better visibility.
