Troubleshooting Process Memory Usage in ControlUp: Tips and Tricks

Posted on October 3, 2024

A user was having trouble with processes showing as "red" in the console for Memory Working Set, specifically for Outlook.exe. They asked if there was a way to change the 500MB barrier, as this was confusing for 1st line support. Another user suggested looking at the details view in task manager instead of the process view, and also mentioned that stress settings can be adjusted globally for all processes. The user provided a link to a knowledge base article about tuning stress. The original user then shared a screenshot and asked if ControlUp is showing better numbers than the OS. The discussion ended with a humorous remark about not being a memory expert.

Hi.

is it possible to change the 500MB barrier when a process gets "red" in the console for "Memory Working Set". Allmost all our Outlook.exe Processes are red and this is confusing for 1st line support. Even more because Task manager on the client shows less RAM in use for outlook.

1: in task manager look at the details view not the process view as that is highly inaccurate (google it but MS also acknowledged this to some of our customers).

2: you can tune the stress settings for processes but this is globally for all processes and not just outlook so I wouldn’t even look at stress for processes by themselves but just look at values.

this kb is about tuning stress https://support.controlup.com/docs/stress-settings

number 2 from my remark is also why I didn’t add process stress calculations to the stress calculator.

I did look at the details tab on the client/xenapp server. still there is a massive gab. see the screenshot. looks like controlup adds virtual ram or other things to "working set". and thats confusing for first level support. So you say controlup is showing better numbers than OS is showing? I am no Memory Expert by the way 🙂
