Locked Out of ControlUp Solve Portal Despite Permissions

Posted on October 13, 2023

A user was locked out of their Solve and DEX portals due to a permissions issue. After being granted all necessary permissions, they still couldn't access Solve from the console. It was established that the user needed the "Use Solve" right in their security policy. The user then tried a few solutions, including the add-cuuser cmdlet (https://support.controlup.com/docs/add-cuuser-create-new-solve-users#), but still could not access the portal. A restart of the monitor did not help however, so the issue is still unresolved.

How to Check if a User Accessed an Application such as a VPN in ControlUp

Posted on October 12, 2023

The user asked if it was possible to see if a user had used an application such as a VPN. @member recommended checking stopped processes and authentication logs, then provided a script to check the VPN default gateway. It was suggested that an alert could be set, but the user noted they were looking for a report. An update was provided, detailing how the user found the information they needed by looking at the user's login and logout times and logs. @member was thanked, and Blair was asked to set up a customer testimonial about it.

Investigating BSOD Reports with ControlUp

Posted on October 4, 2023

A user asked how they can get a BSOD report put into the Device Events of the computer it happened on, and also what parameters are available. A ControlUp member suggested the bug check code should be converted to Hex, and provided an example. They also recommended the user look into scripting, or upgrade to agent 2.13, which includes Windows Error Reporting. ControlUp 2.13 will provide UC&C improvements.

Is it Possible to Track Certificate Expiry with ControlUp?

Posted on October 2, 2023

A user asked if Controlup could track certificate expiry on storefront servers, as is done for ADC (trigger). A PowerShell script fired via a scheduled trigger can be used to alert before cert expiry, but Landon's smarter approach via scoutbees in ScoutBees can also be used. More information can be found in ScoutBees.

Setting Up Persistent Desktops and Servers With ControlUp

Posted on October 2, 2023

A user asked about syncing Active Directory computers with RealTime DX Console, and was advised to use GPOs or automated agent deployment to set up persistent desktops and servers. However, there are drawbacks to the latter which can be found in the ControlUp documentation. The Agent can now be upgraded from the console using a registry flag. The full discussion, including the relevant ControlUp URLs, can be seen at https://controlupcommunity.slack.com/archives/C0473N33S00/p1695332008532109.

Troubleshooting ControlUp Trigger Alerts for Computer Downs

Posted on September 21, 2023

A user asked about creating a trigger for when a machine goes down, and was having trouble getting the alert emails. Suggestions included verifying the machine was up when creating the trigger, killing the agent process, using a script to run checks for down machines, and rebooting the monitor server. It was also suggested to check the incident tab for the event trigger, use a custom trigger with an action to send an email, check the in-ram DB, and get the logs to support for review.

Creating a Trigger to Compare Two PVS Stores in ControlUp

Posted on September 15, 2023

A user asked for help creating a trigger which compares two PVS stores and sends an email if not identical. @member suggested ChatGPT, which can add an error to the event log if the contents are not the same, and a second trigger can be set up for the error. A PowerShell script was provided which writes an error message to the event log if changes are present in the folders, with the needed event log name, source, and EventId customizable.

Troubleshooting a Connection Issue in Instant Clone Pool with ControlUp

Posted on September 11, 2023

Having trouble connecting to an instant clone pool, users discussed a variety of potential causes including a DNS resolve issue, a NetBios name not matching the machine name, and a DNS scavenging issue. Troubleshooting advice included running the Agent diagnostic in the RTC, pinging the PC running the console and from the monitor server, flushing DNS, and looking for information in the log.

Troubleshooting Monthly Trigger Scheduling with ControlUp Monitor Service Time Outs

Posted on September 11, 2023

A user was having trouble scheduling a trigger to run once a month, with the script running correctly when executed manually. After checking backend data and determining a support ticket was required, the team provided a Monitor log4net file and instructions for creating the log file. It was suggested to look into the trigger timings being in different time zones, and instructions were given for setting the Monitor service time outs. In the end it was discovered that the infrastructure servers had incorrect time zones, which caused the problem. ControlUp Monitor service time out was also optimized. The Monitor service should transition from 'started' to 'running' over time. The issue is now resolved.
