Python Support and File Transfer on ControlUp

Posted on February 11, 2024

One user asked if Python will be added to the windows script list on ControlUp. Another user suggested using Powershell to call the Python script. A third user mentioned using Invoke-Webrequest or copying the script itself in the script window for file transfer. Another user suggested using a PS1 script that encapsulates the python script and checking if python is installed, and installing it if necessary. They also mentioned hurdles with file transfer and suggested a feature request for blob storage. Overall, Python support on ControlUp is not currently on the roadmap.

Efficient Deployment Strategies for ControlUp Users

Posted on February 8, 2024

Members of the ControlUp team discussed how to handle deployment scripts requiring an install file or certificate. Suggestions included using a shared location or a platform such as MS Intune/SCCM, although issues with Edge DX were noted. Another option would be to manually install through remote control, but automation is preferred. Some members have found success with using workarounds involving Google Drive and PowerShell scripts.

Automating Server Reboots for Monitored URLs with Scoutbees and ControlUp API

Posted on February 2, 2024

The discussion revolved around automating the process of rebooting a server that is being monitored using Scoutbees. Various suggestions were made, such as using the API to check alerts on an interval, running a custom hive, and using EdgeDX or RTDX. It was suggested that a user feedback item should be created for this feature. A new version of Scoutbees API was mentioned, which allows for retrieving alerts and writing a script to initiate a server restart based on that. The API can be found at https://api.controlup.com/.

Building a Sentiment Survey with ControlUp

Posted on January 31, 2024

A user was building a sentiment survey and wanted to target a specific user group in AD. However, the picker did not show the desired group. A feature that allows for saving drafts was also mentioned. The team discussed upcoming updates that would address these concerns and potentially provide early access to the new version. The surveys are delivered through the Edge DX Agent to the endpoint and the listed AD groups are based on users who have logged into the machines. A team member offered to add the user to the beta for Sentiment V2. If interested, the user can send their contact details and tenant information.

A user asked for recommendations to diagnose high Peak User Input Delays. Another user suggested zooming in on the time of the delay and checking memory usage. They also shared how to find information on what application is slow to respond to user input. The discussion then focused on how to identify the cause of a slow application, often due to resource constraints. The team provided examples, such as MMCexe processing event logs, and suggested that more resources may not always solve the issue.

Understanding Edge DX Agent’s Location Data Accuracy and Privacy Concerns for ControlUp Users

Posted on January 22, 2024

Location data from Edge DX agent seems to be inconsistent, with devices reporting in different locations than their physical location. It was suggested that the agent uses the WAN IP, provided by the ISP, which can be inaccurate. Some users suggest enabling location services on the endpoint for more accurate data. However, there may be privacy concerns with this feature. ControlUp's support site provides information on how to customize locations based on IP ranges.

Discussing Data Retrieval from Custom Data Indexes at ControlUp

Posted on January 10, 2024

The conversation on Slack revolved around pulling data from custom data indexes via API. It was revealed that while there are 7 indexes with varying numbers of items, only 10,000 rows can be queried from each one. This is because EdgeDX expects filtering and aggregation to be done on the tenant side rather than the client side. The logic behind data retention was also brought up, with the max amount of data being 30 days. The discussion ended with the advice to query the collapsed index for more recent data. The full conversation can be found at https://controlup.slack.com/archives/CAZ3VBF6B/p1617709089046900.

ControlUp Logs and Syslog Functionality for Edge DX Users.

Posted on January 5, 2024

A user asked about Syslog functionality for ControlUp logs on their SIEM tool, as they are exclusive users of Edge DX. Another user suggested using API's to extract logs, and mentioned the use of a cloud-hosted Splunk. They also discussed Windows event logs on endpoints, with event IDs for remote control/shadow and shell sessions. Mac logs are kept separately, and can be accessed through a specific command. An event staffer confirmed the information.
