Widget Wednesday: Smarter sharing with dashboard roles and tags
This week’s Widget Wednesday is one of those foundational updates that becomes more valuable as your environment grows. Building dashboards is easy. Managing hundreds of them across different teams, departments, and user groups is the real challenge. In this episode, Chris Twiest shows how new roles, tags, and sharing capabilities make it much easier to organize dashboards and control exactly who sees what.
What’s new in this episode:
More control over shared dashboards:
Dashboards can now be shared with specific users or groups, giving administrators greater flexibility over how dashboard access is managed across the organization.
Updated dashboard roles:
Custom dashboard permissions now include a separate setting that controls whether users can access the Dashboard Gallery. If Gallery access is disabled, users will not see the gallery or any dashboards contained within it.
Introducing dashboard tags:
A new tagging system allows dashboards to be organized using keys and values, with optional colors for easier identification. Tags such as department or role can be applied to shared dashboards and managed by users with the correct organizational editor permissions.
Personalized dashboard visibility:
Tags also control visibility. Users with Viewer access will only see dashboards associated with the tags assigned to them, while other dashboards remain hidden. Roles can be assigned to individual users or groups.
Filter dashboards by tag:
As dashboard collections grow, the dashboard list can now be filtered by tag, making it easier to find and manage the right dashboards quickly.
Why it matters:
The more dashboards an organization creates, the more important organization and access control become. These new capabilities make it easier to securely share dashboards, organize them for different audiences, and simplify the experience for administrators and end users.
