In this episode of Widget Wednesday, Chris Twiest walks through the DEX Score Trending Dashboard and explains how it helps surface device performance issues before they become widespread employee experience problems in ControlUp.
The session focuses on understanding why DEX scores drop, how to interpret the signals behind them, and where teams should take action.
Seeing the scope of the problem
The dashboard immediately answers a critical operational question: how many users are actually impacted. In the example shown, 96 out of 392 devices recorded a DEX score below 5 at least once in the past week, turning DEX from an abstract score into a measurable, actionable concern.
Understanding what drives low DEX scores
The analysis quickly highlights the dominant contributor: memory pressure. With thousands of memory-related events and over 7,000 low-DEX alerts in a single week, the data clearly shows that insufficient RAM remains one of the most common and costly performance bottlenecks.
Tracking trends over time
Rather than just showing totals, the dashboard reveals patterns. By tracking low-DEX events over time, teams can identify emerging issues—such as midweek spikes in low Wi-Fi signal alerts—that may indicate broader infrastructure or environmental problems.
Identifying high-impact devices
One of the most valuable views identifies devices that generate an unusually high number of alerts. In this example, a single device is responsible for hundreds of low-DEX occurrences, shifting the conversation from general health to targeted remediation.
Drilling into root cause
Using filters, the session demonstrates how to investigate an individual device in detail. For the highlighted system, the data clearly indicates persistent memory constraints, helping teams determine whether tuning, remediation, or replacement is the appropriate next step.
Why this matters
DEX improves when IT teams act on evidence, not averages. The DEX Score Trending Dashboard helps organizations prioritize the right devices, address systemic issues such as memory pressure, and take proactive steps to directly improve user experience and operational efficiency.
