Using ControlUp for Application Inventory: Options and Suggestions

Posted on March 21, 2025

A discussion among ControlUp users touched on the use of CU for application inventory purposes. Some suggested exporting the data and generating reports with PowerBI, while others mentioned an option to request CU to build out new canned reports/API calls within DEX reports for VDI and Edge use cases. One member also mentioned plans to improve application usage reporting in the roadmap. Integration of more inventory related reports was also suggested.

I’m curious. Is anyone out there using CU for Application Inventory purposes? If so, I assume your exporting the data and generating reports and etc. with PowerBI or importing to your enterprise asset/application inventory system. If so, how is that going for you?

Lastly, has it been discussed to simply request CU to build out new canned reports / API calls, within DEX reports for both VDI and Edge use cases to be an application inventory system? Today it has limited reporting for this specific use case, but it has all the data already and I believe in many cases depending on your situation it could be asset and application inventory primary. Thoughts?

Tagging @member to comment on this, at least for ControlUp for Desktops. I believe there are plans to improve our application usage reporting (including "local" apps) as part of the roadmap

Wrong Dennis. But Tom, if you need examples of PowerBI querying the API or any help with PowerBI. Let me know.

Right Dennis for the other part of the question

We do have plans indeed to refresh our application reports, although there are other priorities for ControlUp for Apps this is definitely part of the plans for the future.

Thanks for the info. It would be nice to integrate more inventory related reports so hopefully that’s in the plan.

Too many Great Dennis’ around this office. 😂
