Establishing a Logon Metrics Baseline with ControlUp

Posted on September 18, 2025

A user asked about the best method for establishing a baseline of logon metrics. Installing ControlUp in the environment automatically records logon duration and allows for review of average and max times. The ControlUp Insight product, which provided a community baseline average logon duration metric, has been discontinued. To determine the fastest logon time in an environment, a Windows machine with the ControlUp for VDI agent can be set up in a specific OU. Comparing the current values to the best case would determine the potential for improvement.

Question from the webinar: What is the leading method for establishing a baseline of logon metrics so we have some idea of where we are and where we wish to investigate?

If you install ControlUp in your environment we automatically record the logon duration for your environment! You can then review the average and max logon times to determine your current baseline. The next step is to determine if it’s "acceptable" or needs improvement. ControlUp used to provide a community baseline average logon duration metric across all organizations with ControlUp Insight, but that product was discontinued and a logon duration baseline has not been reimplemented yet. I can tell you the last metric I saw had the baseline value at 27 seconds.

To determine the absolute fastest a windows machine can login in your environment I suggest standing up a Windows machine in a OU with blocked inheritance and no GPO’s applied to it — but with the ControlUp for VDI agent installed. Logon to the machine during the ‘lowest load’ hours to ensure maximum hardware resources are available with minimal contention and see what value you get. For Server OS, this will be the best you can get for your environment. From there you can see what your current values are vs the best your environment and see if it’s worth the effort to improve.

If the best case scenario is 20 seconds and you’re at 25 seconds then the effort or ability to reduce it further may very difficult.

However if your at 120seconds and your best case is 20 seconds then there is a lot of opportunity for improvement 🙂
