Syncing Between AD and ControlUp

Posted on February 22, 2023

A user asked about putting in place a sync between AD and ControlUp and wondered what the folderpath attribute should look like in their case. The universal sync script is the replacement for the CVAD script, and should be used for EUC. It was suggested to add an introductory section comparing the AD Sync and EUC Sync to the documentation, which the team is now doing. The link in the EUC Sync documentation was removed due to being deprecated. The updated documents can be found at https://support.controlup.com/docs.

Read the entire ‘Syncing Between AD and ControlUp’ thread below:

Hello,

I am trying to put in place a sync between the AD and ControlUp.

I am following the doc but since I already have an existing folder structure, I am wondering what the folderpath attribute should look like in my case.

Or is it recommended to create a new structure and remove the "old" one later?

Thanks in advance, cheers,

The sync script will take the folder you specify and make it a managed folder. Anything in it that doesn’t belong will be wiped. Anything that should be in the managed folder and isn’t there will be added or moved from another existing folder.

Basically once you run it many of your old folders can probably be removed after the machines are moved.

Thanks @member, that makes it much clearer for me.

Now on the AD side, I could not find in the doc (https://support.controlup.com/docs/citrix-virtual-apps-and-desktops-sync-script) where to specify the OU to sync. It’s missing. I just found a lot of informationin the AD_Sync and also in the Build_CUTree scripts.

For euc please use the universal sync script

Thanks @member, but can you elaborate a bit more please? I understand that the universal sync script makes it easier but I’m confused now, why not use the AD sync and CVAD scripts in my case ? 😜

Euc sync is the replacement for cvad script

Ad I’d only use for non euc/cloud machinesOk thanks for the quick answers.

Then may I suggest it’s added to the doc… 😉

This is the one you probably want. https://support.controlup.com/docs/euc-synchronization-with-universal-sync-script

Sure, thanks @member, but what I mean is that if this one replaces the others, then it should be mentioned… cheers

Thanks for the feedback @member – I will notify the Documents team so they can make sure it is more clear.

Already have and each doc will be updated later today.

@member from our doc team is on it!

Thanks for the clarification.

But sorry to be a pain, but there’s one link not working in https://support.controlup.com/docs/euc-synchronization-with-universal-sync-script in the first point of "How you benefit".

Cheers

The link has been removed. We decided to deprecate all legacy script articles yesterday.

Thanks for reporting

And maybe it’s only me (probably) but when I look at these two articles AD Sync and EUC Sync, I’d like a small explanation or comparison of the two. Should I choose either one or the other or can I run both ? Sorry if this is clear to everyone…

The AD sync script should only be used if you don’t have a EUC source to get the data from (MS RDS farm for example). From experience I know that AD’s are not always the best maintained and the times that I have seen it being used a lot of garbage was being added to the console.

Thanks, and this is maybe the little thing that could be added as an intro to the section 😉

OK, I will add this to the documentation
