Troubleshooting Screen Recording in ControlUp for macOS with an MDM Deployment

Posted on March 4, 2026

A user posed a question regarding an MDM deployment of ControlUp for macOS and how the screen recording window should behave when remote access is attempted. Other users clarified that the pop-up is expected and not able to be managed by an MDM due to Apple restrictions. Additionally, it was noted that only standard users can approve screen recording via PPPC and other Quotes could be found. The article available is no longer available.

Read the entire ‘Troubleshooting Screen Recording in ControlUp for macOS with an MDM Deployment’ thread below:

Hi, I am working on setting up ControlUp for Desktop on macOS with JamfPro as the MDM. I have imported the configuration profile files from the ControlUp site and deployed them to my test devices. I wanted to know if when trying to remote into a macOS device the screen recording window should be prompting on the user to allow or deny, see attached screenshot. Is this expected or the config file named "ScreenRecording Privacy Preferences Configuration Profile" should be taking care of the prompt for the user?

This profile is only to allow Standard user to get the promt and to allow the screen sharing or to enable it in System Settings

Apple will Never auto allow screenharing for apps even for like Zoom, Teams ….

This is an expected behavior for the user to allow when someone attempts to remote in with ControlUp, right?

The screensharing function is not managable from MDM platforms yet as Apple restrict this to a user level function."

Correct , we also see it

i created Comms and shared with all the macOS users in our org, when a engineers want to remote for the first time , they will see the popup

Thanks for the clarification.

More quotes 😄

The only permission that an MDM can enforce is to allow standard users to approve ScreenRecording via PPPC. This is true for Jamf and Intune. Screen recording is a setting that can not be enabled by an Admin/MDM as part of Apple user privacy rights.

You cannot grant screen recording rights to an application, that must be done by the user. This is an Apple limitation.
