This week’s Widget Wednesday introduces a major step forward for dashboarding in ControlUp: the ability to build dashboards using VDI data sources.
With this update, dashboards are no longer limited to a single data domain. You can now choose between ControlUp for Desktops and ControlUp for VDI directly in the dashboard, opening new ways to visualize and compare performance across environments.
What’s new in this episode:
VDI as a dashboard data source:
A new “provider” option allows you to select ControlUp for VDI, enabling access to VDI-specific data when building widgets. This creates a clear separation between desktop and VDI data while allowing both to be used within the same dashboard.
Available VDI data sources:
Today, three primary VDI data sources are available:
- Machine
- Session
- Netscaler
These provide a solid foundation for building dashboards, with additional data sources expected to be added over time.
Logon duration insights:
One of the key use cases demonstrated is analyzing logon duration metrics. You can calculate averages, minimums, and maximums and present them using visualizations such as gauges or grids. This helps teams better understand user experience and session performance.
Customizable metrics and visualization:
Widgets support flexible configurations, including unit settings (such as time in seconds), grouping by user count, and filtering out unnecessary data. This allows for more tailored and meaningful dashboard views.
Side-by-side comparisons:
You can build widgets that compare desktop and VDI metrics directly within the same dashboard, such as logon duration across both environments. Distinct icons help differentiate widget types, making dashboards easier to read and navigate.
Consistent time-based analysis:
All widgets align with the selected timeframes, ensuring consistency across data sources and improving the accuracy of comparisons.
Why it matters:
This update expands what dashboards can do. By bringing VDI data into a single experience, teams can build more complete performance views, compare environments, and gain deeper insight into user experience and system behavior.
More data. More context. Better decisions.
