Troubleshooting Remote Control on Windows 11 Entra Machines

Posted on October 4, 2024

ControlUp users are discussing the behavior of Windows 11 Entra joined machines when connected to VPN and trying to perform remote control sessions. The upcoming 2.15 agent may resolve these issues and can be tested on lab machines before rollout. The new agent also includes the ability to reconnect through reboot. The reconnect may take up to a minute due to data collection intervals and IP updates.

Read the entire ‘Troubleshooting Remote Control on Windows 11 Entra Machines’ thread below:

We’re in the process of rolling out Windows 11 Entra joined machines to replace our existing igel and citrix setup. Something we’re noticing a lot is that

  1. If our desktop support team is performing a remote control assist session machine connects to our VPN (Globalprotect) the support session will disconnect
  2. In the above scenario or if an agent connects to the vpn on their own and we try to do a remote control session it will often fail to connect for several minutes, seemingly 5+ minutes in some cases

Is anyone else seeing this type of behavior? If so have you foundanything to help reduce these disconnects or the period between when a connection can be established after connecting to VPN?

The 2.15 agent that is coming out soon will support RC reconnect, so that might resolve issue 1

Do you see the beta 4 windows agent in your version control list by any chance. Under settings

You can tag some test machines and roll out the beta to just those machines and see if that addresses it

I do see that, perfect I’ll try it on some lab machines and let you know if it makes a difference in our environment . Thanks!

From my initial testing this seems to help quite a bit with both issues. In scenario one it was able to recconect on it’s own after approximately 15-30 seconds, in scenario 2 I was able to connect about 1 minute after the vpn connection was established as opposed to approximately 5 minutes

The reconnect also works through reboot btw

I think with a 5 minute reconnect limit

The 1 minute could be because of the data collection interval. If there is an active RC that isn’t the case because the websocket connection remains open, but to establish a new session there might be some IP updates that can take up to a minute

Nice, thank you for the help and info!
