ControlUp Academy Alert Policy and Scoutbees’ 60 Minute Cap on Test Frequency Explained

Posted on July 16, 2024

A user asked if it was possible to expand the alert policy from scoutbees to one day instead of the capped 60 minute setting. Another user, Joel, explained that this was not possible as it goes against the proactive nature of the synthetic testing, which aims to provide alerts for potential availability issues. @member requested more information about their specific use case, which involved setting up email alerts for expiring SSL certificates. Joel suggested options such as increasing the "subsequent tests" value or checking the "Do not send a notification" option to prevent excessive notifications.

Hi All, Is there a option to expand the alert policy from scoutbees to one day instead of the current setting that has cap on 60 minutes?

Do you mean the test frequency? I think that’s not possible. I think the original design decision was that anything over 60 minutes would not provide enough test coverage to live up to the premise of what proactive synthetic testing is about, which is providing you with proactive alerting for when availability of a resource is affected. Testing once a day will miss a lot of time of the day during which availability potentially could be affected.

Could you further elaborate on your use case?

@member Hi Joel thanks for ur reply! What I want to use this for is setting up an email alert to notify when SSL certificate is about to expire. But because the 60 minutes is the only option, that would mean the mailbox is being send alert every hour.

I see. So you mean as part of an HTTP/S test?

Some ways you could prevent the noise would be to increase the "subsequent tests" value. Or you could check the "Do not send a notification" option. This I believe would still include it in the daily digest, although I have not validated it
