Some users reported experiencing incorrect time zones on Windows endpoints in the Netherlands, with some showing locations in the US and Australia. ControlUp uses location services or IP address to determine location, with location services being the primary option. However, devices not using location services may still have incorrect locations based on their IP address. Disabling location services does not solve the time zone issue. It is possible that Microsoft’s IP to location database has errors.

Hello all,
We are currently experiencing some weird behavior regarding time zone on Windows endpoints. We are located in the Netherlands but some devices are reporting they are in the US or Australia (and sometimes other countries). Users are also reporting they get the timezone from that specific country. The endpoint map in ControlUp also shows this location. I was wondering where does controlup get the location from? Any tips how we can troubleshoot it?
IP address. In 1 or 2 ways.
If the device has location services enabled. We ask location services. You can see what source location services used in Configuration > Data >location_info
Where source is the source used when location services are available.
1 = satelite
2 = nearby wifi and bluetooth networks
3 = IP address
If location services are NOT available. The tenant will do the same thing that location services do with source = 3. Base it on the IP address.
The difference is that the tenant and the Windows location services probably use different IP to location databases. So the results might not always be the same
If your devices are switching time zones. I’m guessing that it is location services and that you’re using a VPN connection of some sort.
@member thanks for your reply! In the meantime I was also doing some investigation and I found out that the geolocation from the ISP is correct but the geolocation from the device is totally wrong
I am sure these devices don’t use any VPN connection. The devices are used by employees in daycare location
You can disable our use of location services. But obviously that doesn’t solve your time zone issue.
I’m guessing that Microsoft’s IP to location database just has a mistake in it 😞
That isn’t uncommon. It is why IP to location is our lowest priority option
Interesting, didn’t knew that option was available
