Widget Wednesday: A redesigned filtering experience for faster, simpler analysis
This week’s Widget Wednesday focuses on major updates to the filtering experience and UI in ControlUp Dashboards, making it easier to navigate, apply filters, and work with data across the entire dashboard.
Building on previous enhancements, filters have expanded well beyond basic group and tag selections, now supporting a much broader range of attributes and a more intuitive interface.
What’s new in this episode:
Expanded filtering capabilities:
Filters now include a wide range of attributes, such as:
- City
- Country
- Device name
- And more than twenty additional parameters
This expansion enables more inclusive, precise data analysis without requiring complex configurations.
Redesigned filter UI:
The filter interface has been updated and is now positioned prominently at the top left of the dashboard, making it easier to access and apply filters quickly. The new design simplifies navigation and improves overall usability.
Global filtering across widgets:
Filters applied at the top level automatically interact with all relevant widgets. For example, selecting manufacturers such as Dell or Lenovo instantly refines the data across the dashboard, ensuring consistency and clarity in its presentation.
Flexible filtering methods:
Users can switch between different filtering approaches, including query-based filters that support more advanced scenarios such as exclusionary filtering. This adds flexibility for more nuanced data exploration.
Integration with VDI and future data sources:
The session also highlights ongoing work to integrate VDI data and introduce VDI Global Filters. Additional data sources, including synthetic monitoring and DAS IQ, are planned to further expand the scope of filtering and visibility.
Unified variables and filters experience:
Variables and filters are now integrated into a single row, simplifying interaction and reducing UI complexity. Users can still configure variables as before, but with a more streamlined experience.
Improved variable search and comparisons:
Search within variables has been enhanced, making it easier to locate specific data points and perform comparisons, such as analyzing usage between applications like Firefox and Chrome.
Why it matters:
These updates significantly improve how users interact with dashboards. With a cleaner UI, expanded filtering options, and tighter integration between filters and variables, dashboards become easier to use, more flexible, and better suited for real-world analysis.
Less friction. More flexibility. Better insights.
