Limitations of RemoteDX and EdgeDX for Non-Windows Devices in ControlUp

Posted on August 21, 2024

A user was experiencing difficulty connecting to the physical endpoint with Edge DX from a VDI session. The link between RemoteDX and EdgeDX is currently only supported for Windows devices, and there are no plans for future support. This limitation can be reported and upvoted on Uservoice. The "jump to device" functionality may still be possible by copying the device name and searching for it in the device details tab. There is currently no documentation or mention of this limitation being a known issue or unsupported in the release notes or knowledgebase. It is believed to be due to the ability for RemoteDX to pull the device ID from Windows, which is not built in for Linux/IGEL/thin clients.

Read the entire ‘Limitations of RemoteDX and EdgeDX for Non-Windows Devices in ControlUp’ thread below:

For some reason we’re not able to connect to the physical endpoint with Edge DX from a VDI session via that same endpoint’s RemoteDX info…. See (redacted) video 🙂

We have a support ticket open, but I thought I’d post this here as well to see if the community has any thoughts 🙂

Are there plans for future support of this functionality? ControlUp has been pushing "IGEL" pretty hard in marketing 😉

I don’t know 😧

Your best bet is to open a feature request via Uservoice and get a bunch of people (ideally from multiple organizations) to upvote it. It makes it more appealing for PM.

Ok – Just FYI, there is no documentation to suggest that this is a feature limited to Windows, only…. In fact it seems to suggest the opposite:

https://support.controlup.com/docs/how-to-view-remote-dx-data#client-connection-details

I also see no mention of this being either a known issue or unsupported on the release notes or the knowledgebase?

https://support.controlup.com/docs/remote-dx-known-issues

Is this a limitation of the linux RemoteDX agent, or the EdgeDX agent?

Just to clarify: as Dennis indicates, the "jump to device" between the VDI and Physical Endpoints interfaces is only for windows today and is by design. The only bug is that if it’s a non-windows device is should not be blue and clickable. I believe it had to do with the ability for remote DX to pull the device ID from the device, which on Windows happens and for Linux/IGEL/thin clients is not built in

You can of course still copy the device name, go to the devices details tab and search from there for the client device. Not as convenient of course but besides the "jump" there’s no functionality missing

Indeed, however that ‘jump’ is documented (expected) functionality, and being unable to find any documentation to suggest an exception otherwise, coupled with the UI behavior, I should think it would be considered a missing functionality and/or a bug.
