Where are ControlUp User Console Credentials Stored?

Posted on September 25, 2023

In a Slack discussion, the user asked if the username/password for a ControlUp Enterprise User Console on a custom hive is stored in the cloud. @member mentioned that the credentials are stored locally, saved encrypted in the custom hive local db file. For the Cloud hive, these credentials are stored encrypted in the AWS Key Management Service.

Hi guys. Security query re: Scoutbees. I created an ‘EUC–>Custom Hive’ and installed the hive110_1201x64.exe application on an internal windows server. The Username/password for the AD account in the custom hive is entered in the Solve GUI solve.controlup.com. Does anyone know if the username/password is actually stored on a central server within ControlUp in the cloud or is the credentials just stored on my internal Windows Server running the Hive software? If i create an ‘EUC–>Cloud Hive’ i suspect the username/password is stored on a central ControlUp server in the cloud since there is no internal on-prem server with the hive software installed.

AFAIK there is no official documentation but I talked with @member about this when I was in Israel Sept 2022.

He mentioned that the creds for the custom hive will not stored in the cloud. They are part of the local hive installation („ls“ file in Install directory).

Indeed. Credentials of a Scout that is running on custom hive are never leaving the custom hive server. They are save encrypted in the custom hive local db file.

Thanks guys. Would be interesting to know if the username/password for the EUC–>Cloud Hive is also encrypted but stored in the cloud in a secure manner. There is no information online which means it is very difficult to alleviate any concerns from an IT Security department.

For the Cloud hive the creds will be stored encrypted in the AWS Key Management Service.
