Investigating Performance Issues in Citrix VDI with NVIDIA GRID GPU

Posted on October 4, 2023

A user reported strange performance differences between identical Citrix VDI machines with NVIDIA GRID GPU configured, all started from the same master. Though NVIDIA licensing and configuration was OK, some machines did not show a GPU in use. Other users suggested checking the ControlUp Agent delayed start setting and switching between native Microsoft APIs and NVIDIA metrics (https://support.controlup.com/docs/gpu-monitoring-with-controlup?highlight=gpu). They also recommended looking at known issues. The customer planned to investigate the issue further the next day.

Hi all, i am troubleshooting performance problems in a Citrix VDI and we see some interesting differences between machines (screenshots) . All machines are started from the same master and all have NVIDIA GRID GPU configured. NVIDIA licensing is ok. Nutanix hypervisor shows all machine with identical configuration. Anyone an idea why we see this differences? 2nd question: Is it normal that we see 5 GPUs in the device manager (2nd screenshot)

I am not surprised about the multiple graphics adapters. machines not showing a gpu in use is strange though, do those machines show the nvidia in the device manager and are they showing as licensed??

yes, we checked both and see NVIDIA GPU in device manager and we checked in the machine the license status. it’s ok

on the machines now showing a gpu are you able to restart our agent? We’ve seen things similar int he past where the nvidia drivers started loading after ours ( was showing different int he same dg) and we needed to set the controlup agent to a delayed start

we also have the option to switch between native microsoft api’s or nvidia metrics see https://support.controlup.com/docs/gpu-monitoring-with-controlup?highlight=gpu

check the known issue as well

very good hints, i will look at that withe the customer tomorrow and will report here 😉 Thanks a lot
