This week’s Widget Wednesday focuses on a foundational improvement to ControlUp Dashboards, a major upgrade to filtering capabilities that makes dashboards easier to build, manage, and use.
In the previous episode, we looked at enhancements to variables. This time, the focus shifts to filters, which now remove much of the complexity that previously required variables.
What’s new in this episode:
From complex variables to simple filters:
Previously, filtering dashboards often required creating variables for attributes such as city, device type, or other attributes. This added complexity and setup overhead. With the new updates, many of these use cases can now be handled directly through filters, simplifying the entire process.
Expanded filtering options:
Filters now go far beyond basic group or tag selection. You can filter across a wide range of attributes, including:
- Agent version
- BIOS details
- Geographic location
- CPU type
- Department
- Device name
- Hardware manufacturer
- Online/offline status
This allows for much more precise and flexible dashboard views.
Global filtering across the dashboard:
One of the biggest changes is that filters are now global. Instead of applying filters individually at the widget level, a single filter applies across all widgets on the dashboard.
This reduces setup time and ensures consistency across your entire view.
Real-time, intuitive filtering:
Filters can be combined using AND / OR logic, making it easy to refine datasets dynamically. For example:
- Show only online devices
- Combine with Windows OS
- Or filter by specific manufacturers or locations
All of these updates are instant across the dashboard.
Why it matters:
This is a foundational shift in how dashboards are built and used. By simplifying filtering and making it global, dashboards become faster to configure, easier to maintain, and far more intuitive to interact with.
Less setup. More clarity. Faster answers.
